History of the Containment Wall Bund.

Leaders in Spill Containment

Bunding Solutions, are pioneers in spill containment solutions. Their Containment Wall System is renowned worldwide, serving the oil, gas, water, and associated industries with excellence.

Their successful installations include Cuadrilla’s fracking plant, Hinkley Power Point C, Augean’s facility at Dundee docks, various European chemical companies in Holland, and the former SSI steel plant in Teesside.

Containment Wall System:

  • Manufactured in the UK.

  • Complies with SPCC, EPA Container Storage Regulation 40 CFR 264.175 USA.

  • Meets the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001.

  • ISO 9001 approved, maintaining a Controlled Quality Assurance regime with subcontractors.

Bund Integrity:

This bunding system has a 30-year track record of flawless performance. An Engineering Memo provides test evidence on the containment wall system’s fluid retention and hydrostatic pressure capabilities.

Champions of the BSIF Pollution Prevention Award 2023:

Fosse Liquitrol’s innovative approach earned them the BSIF Pollution Prevention Award 2023 at the Contamination & Geotech Exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham. Supported by the Environment Agency, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, and Natural Resources Wales, this award recognizes exemplary pollution risk management. Their modular bunding solution addressed a critical need at the Watchgate Water Treatment Plant, setting a new standard for pollution prevention.

The Challenge:

United Utilities, operating the Watchgate Water Treatment Plant near Kendal, faced a significant challenge. The plant’s 30,000-liter sodium hypochlorite tank was inadequately contained, posing a severe environmental hazard.

The Solution:

A modular bunding system tailored to the site's needs. Specifications included a 14.14m x 4.12m x 0.91m bund, lined with an LLDPE liner compatible with up to 15% sodium hypochlorite concentration. The bund was designed to contain 110% of the tank’s capacity, totalling 39,000 liters. The modular bund was quickly delivered and installed, ensuring minimal disruption and easy relocation. The permeability of the liner was confirmed by rigorous testing.

Impact and Benefits:

  • Environmental Protection: The system mitigated risks to workforce safety and prevented environmental pollution, complying with the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001 and best practices for bulk chemical storage.

  • Cost Efficiency: The modular bunding solution was cost-effective compared to concrete and steel bunds, especially for temporary storage and quick assembly needs.

  • Wider Applications: This project demonstrates the potential for similar solutions in refineries, chemical plants, waste management, and construction sites.

Training and Safety:

Offering a ‘Train the Trainer’ course for United Utilities’ Environmental staff. This training ensures staff are well-equipped to handle spills, reinforcing a culture of safety and environmental responsibility, covering:

  • Spill awareness and response.

  • Safe and effective use of spill control resources.

  • Emergency spill simulation and containment techniques.
